Inspired by the former American president Richard Nixon’s official visit to China in 1972, the opera was written by John Adams and premiered at the Houston Grand Opera in 1987. The independent judging panel for the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, which nominated the production for its opera award, has now hit back, doubling down on their support of the show and saying that they stand by its original nomination.

The theater was damaged in 2017 by Hurricane Harvey but got reopened on September 2018. The architectural work was done by Eugene Aubry of Morris Architects. The inauguration of this venue was lit by the performance of Tango Argentino in the Brown Theatre.
